Rudy Vega is nearly complete! January 5th, 2007

The following is an excerpt from Rudy Vega Loved Rutabagas, a 587 word picture book. That is, other than the included recipe(s) I’ll work on Sunday — since I want it to be a recipe I’ve actually developed – because I am C-R-A-Z-Y, that’s what.

Rudy Vega Loved Rutabagas is a what happens when a boy loves his vegetables a little too much. Of complete non-importance to a publisher, this book was actually written in honor of my late Westie, Rudy, who was neither a boy, nor in love with rutabagas! The following excerpt is copyrighted material, not ever to be used for anything without my permission, forever and ever, Amen!

Rudy Vega Loved Rutabagas

By Gina Ritter

Rudy Vega loved rutabagas. He ate them every day. Friends at school called him Rutabaga Vega.

Every day Rudy ate slices of rutabaga for breakfast, rutabaga chips for snack, rutabaga sandwiches for lunch, and chunks of cooked rutabaga for dinner.

“You must eat something else,” Rudy’s mom declared, “or you’ll turn yellow! We’re going to see Dr. Lyle.”

At the doctor’s office Rudy said, “Vegetables are good for you. Why can’t I eat rutabagas?”

Dr. Lyle said, “Rudy, too much of a good thing is definitely not a good thing. You could make yourself sick eating only one kind of food.”

Dr. Lyle wrote a prescription that said:

More fruits and vegetables
of all colors for Rudy’s diet.

“Rutabagas can be a treat,” the doctor said, “after you’ve eaten something healthy.”

“But rutabagas are healthy!” Rudy whined.

             Rudy’s mom sighed.

The doctor sighed too. “I know, Rudy. I meant other healthy things.”

It was Rudy’s turn to sigh.
